Do not begin by asking, “Which community should we choose?” Begin by asking, “What does Mom or Dad need, what matters to them, and which options could honor both?”

A tour should help evaluate a plan—not become the plan.
When worry is high, searching for a community feels like action. Yet a family can visit several places without first agreeing on the problem they are trying to address, the support Mom or Dad needs, or the alternatives still worth understanding.

Other possible paths
Before assuming a move is necessary, consider whether support at home, home changes, downsizing, moving closer to family, or community resources could address the concern.
The right level of support
Independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and other settings serve different needs. Qualified professionals should help clarify which level is appropriate.
The complete cost
Ask what is included, what costs extra, how fees may change as support increases, which deposits are refundable, and what financial resources or benefits may apply.
Life after move-in
Look beyond the tour. Consider staffing, relationships, daily routines, healthcare coordination, transportation, communication with family, and how changing needs are handled over time.
A fair view of senior living
The goal is not to avoid a community. It is to choose for the right reasons.

While you are there
Pay attention to ordinary moments.
A tour shows what a community wants visitors to see. Daily life is often revealed in the small interactions happening around it.
- Do team members know residents by name and speak with them respectfully?
- Are residents engaged by choice, or does the activity calendar merely look impressive?
- Does the community feel welcoming during an ordinary meal, evening, or weekend?
- Are answers specific and consistent when the family asks difficult questions?
